The bend in the track here can be explained as follows. Armley tunnel, although short (just over 100m) was a twin bore tunnel, each bore with two tracks. When the line to Bradford was reduced from four tracks to two in 1968, the southern bore was closed and the two remaining tracks both use the northern bore, emerging at this point from under Tong Road.
