Quite a florid Baroque, "appropriate for its purpose: a mixture of education and entertainment (the first floor originally included an art gallery)". By John Johnstone, 1882-85. Grade II listed. Now occupied by various charities, including Victim Support and Warm Zone. Gateshead's Victorian civic buildings huddle together at the junctions of West and Swinburne Streets as if for protection from C20th encroachment. They lend a coherence to Gateshead which is otherwise thin on the ground.
