Entrance to Harden Quarry

The red whinstone quarried here is known as Harden Red, and is technically a mica-porphyrite. This decorative rock is exported via Berwick-upon-Tweed and is often used for surfacing cycle-paths - the road surface in the picture may well be made of it. http://www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/nationalparkmineralsplan.pdf
