The Longmoor Military Railway was built by the Royal Engineers from 1903 in order to train soldiers on railway construction and operations. The extension of the railway to Liss was completed in August 1933 after having to build a number of bridges and overcoming very wet ground. The end of the line was fitted with a buffer stop similar to this one, but shortly after its completion a train failed to stop, demolished the buffer stop and ended up on the far side of Station Road. Nobody was hurt but the army decided a more substantial buffer stop was required and a concrete one was built. In 1944 after a train pushed a carriage on to the top of the buffer stop, the buffer stop was heightened to over seven feet. The Longmoor Military Railway closed down with a ceremonial last day of operation on 31st October 1969 for a full history of this very interesting railway see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longmoor_Military_Railway Eventually as it was rusting and crumbling it was replaced by the one seen here, brought from elsewhere in Southern England. It is now at the southern end of the Liss Riverside Railway Walk. For more information about this walk see http://www.lissconservation.btck.co.uk/LissRiversideRailwayWalk Liss station is just to the left out of the picture.
