Bellsbank is a post-World War II public housing estate built to accommodate miners. It has suffered considerably since the closure of the mines around Dalmellington, with an unemployment rate as high as 37% in the 1990s, the worst in Scotland. Most of the houses in this part of the estate are now unoccupied.
