Buckden: Queen Katherine's Garden

The garden, begun in 1992 and designed by William Dawson, is dedicated to Queen Katherine of Aragon, who was imprisoned at Buckden Palace in 1533-4. It is a replica of a Tudor knot garden and is maintained by volunteers. The octagonal table in the foreground is decorated with mosaic pomegranates - the fruit was Katherine's emblem and there are pots of pomegranate in the garden. The inner gatehouse of the former palace of the Bishops of Lincoln is in the background. In the ogee above the first-floor window is the armorial device of Bishop John Russell, bishop when it was built (c 1490).
