The base commemorates the RAF Silverstone 1943-46. It was used for training crews of Wellington Bombers. The sign was unveiled by racing driver Jackie Stewart in 2008 to commemorate 60 years of racing at Silverstone. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4633120 for a close up.
