The East Riding House of Correction was built, simultaneously with the new Sessions House, 1805-10. The complex was closed when the institution was transferred to the Prison Commissioners in 1878 under the Prisons Act of 1877. In 1884 the former two-storey, brick Governor's House was sold to the Sisters of Mercy of Anlaby Road, Kingston upon Hull, who opened a branch of their convent here. The building was bought in 1959 and adapted as police accommodation in 1961-2. It continues to be occupied by Beverley Police Station to this day.
