The railway line to Cambridge was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway on 30th July 1845. This station opened with the line. A fuller history can be seen at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_(Essex)_railway_station This is the view from the down platform while the up platform is over the footbridge. The entire village of Newport is on this side of the line with only countryside on the far side. The next station in this direction is Audley End.
