Path on route of the Quarry Drift Tramway that led to Quarry Pit Image The heavy covers situated on the grass each side of the seat are for the sport of outdoor quoits Image In this game, metal rings are tossed over pegs (hobs) embedded in a soft clay surface. The rules of the Northern Game, set out in 1881, has hobs protruding three to four inches, 11 yards apart, set in 3 feet squares of clay. The steel quoits have been standardised at 8 1/2 inches outside diameter, 5 1/2 inch hole and 5 1/4 lb (2.4kg) in weight. Important officials are the 'Bibber', 'Shower up' or 'Coach' - the thrower's helper who stands by the target hob and shouts advice and encouragement, and the 'Trig-man' - an adjudicator who watches out for foot faults. http://www.tradgames.org.uk/games/Quoits.htm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quoits#The_northern_game
