The vehicles, queuing on a section of the A20 that runs beside the Aycliff housing estate, were waiting their turns to board a ferry at the Eastern Docks, having been allowed to proceed from where they had been held on the M20, as part of Operation Stack. The cause of Operation Stack having to be put into action was the result of strike action in Calais, on the other side of The Channel.
