The Scenic Railway is the oldest wooden roller coaster in the UK, having been opened in 1920 in the Dreamland amusement park. It is one of only a handful worldwide which has a brake man on board to control the speed of the cars. It has survived several changes of ownership of the park, and changes in taste in fairground attractions. However the other facilities in the park have been gradually run down and removed and there does not appear to be much left now. Dreamland was open in the summer of 2006, but it is not clear whether it will open again in the summer of 2007. In 2002 The Scenic Railway was given Grade II status after a recommendation from English Heritage.
