The Shell Book of East Sussex describes Penhurst: "Church and Manor House, known as Church Farm, form a rare and exquisite manorial group, which has remained unchanged for centuries. It stands high overlooking the farms and woodlands of Ashburnham: the approaches to it, according to a 19th century report, were so bad in winter that it was almost inaccessible." In the words of another writer: "The ghosts about here are too many to be counted. This is the intensest countryside for miles - turned in upon itself, separate, pinned to the past, silent, undisturbed." This view of The Manor House is from Penhurst Lane. It was built in the 17th century by William Relph. The Manor House is now 'Penhurst Retreat Centre'.
