Pevsner considered Norwood House to be the town's best Georgian house. Built circa 1760 for attorney Jonathan Midgley, possibly to the designs of Thomas Atkinson. Depicted, left is the library block of circa 1825. In 1908 the then East Riding County Council erected buildings in the grounds of the house and opened a secondary school known as Beverley High School for Girls. Norwood House became a boarding house for teachers and pupils. In 1999 the house was no longer required by the school; it stood empty until 2012 when it was used as an office/training centre, with an adjacent tea room and restaurant.
