The German Garden was the gift of the West German Horticultural Federation, following their participation in the first City of Coventry Flower Show in 1962. The garden was opened on 8 May 1963 by His Excellency the German Ambassador Dr Hasso von Etzdorf. It included raised planters with sensory planting and Braille signs for blind and partially-sighted visitors, a sundial and paving. Boards on the site have photos of its original layout. "Over time the garden fell into disrepair and was re-landscaped in 2011 … two new raised planters were incorporated to provide an insight into how the area used to look. Members of the Coventry German Circle assisted with this planting and cemented the continued friendship and connection between Coventry and Germany" – information board on site.
