The first known written reference to “Austrilia House” (sic) as it was then known is in 1857. It isn't certain how the pub got its name but contrary to popular belief, Porthmadog ships didn’t carry slates to Australia. The pub was re-named Y Gestiana in recent years, but reverted to its previous name in 2015 when it was taken over by the group of local breweries which also manages The Albion in Conwy. *Thanks to Robert Cadwalader of Porthmadog Maritime Museum and historypoints.org for the information.
