Opened in 1992, the centre is located on the site of the Queen's Road Methodist church, which was home to the English speaking Methodist congregation prior to 1990. In the late 1980's, as a result of the crumbling structure of the Queen's Road building, it was decided to demolish the church building and to construct a new one on the same site. The Welsh and English speaking Methodist congregations in town decided to join together to create a centre that would provide a new home for both congregations. The old church building for the Welsh speaking Methodists is at the top of the town, near to the clock tower. The building has since become a public house, called The Academy.
