HMS Onyx is a conventional diesel electric submarine that saw service in the Falklands War and was preserved in Birkenhead as part of the Historic Warships collection. She now faces an uncertain future and in 2014 was alongside at Rosneath on the Gare Loch. It is to be hoped she can continue in preservation. This view shows the pair of Admiralty standard range 16 VMS diesel generators that both charged the batteries and could directly run the two 6,000 shaft horsepower motors turning twin screws. It's fair to say there's not a lot of room in a conventional submarine. Here is a picture in Birkenhead - Image
