Early 19th Century milestone on A350 Lacock bypass - see Image for wider view. Grade II listed - see http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1022146. The plate stating "to Bath 12" might seem unusual, given that the A350 is a main north - south road. however the explanation is that it is situated by the junction for Corsham Road to the west and Cantax Hill into Lacock to the east, and this route served for several centuries in mediaeval times as the main London to Bath road, running between Avebury and Corsham south of the present route of the A4 through Calne and Chippenham. Whilst its importance had diminished by the time of this milestone, it was nevertheless still an east - west route. Similar milestones exist along Corsham Road and near Lacock Bridge to the south-east of the village.
