This 236 bed hospital on the edge of the large Protestant enclave of the Lower Shankill was founded by the Catholic Sisters of Mercy in 1883 and from the start treated patients without regard to creed. The Hospital was fully integrated into the NHS in 1972. Occupying its present site since 1900 it is a mixture of Victorian and modern buildings.
