The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust maintain a number of these roadside verges as nature reserves, including here alongside Broadgate Road. The bridge carrying the A1 over the road can be just seen ahead. This though was once a railway cutting. Broadgate Road and the first part of Morkery Lane beyond the A1 have been routed along the trackbed of the former railway line between Saxby in Leicestershire and the East Coast Main Line at Little Bytham. It was built by the Midland Railway and opened on 4th April 1898. The whole line closed on 2nd March 1959. There are a number of photographs of the line in its heyday here http://www.systonandpeterborough.co.uk/index.php?p=1_11_PAGE-9
