The name Eagle House appears over the middle entrance, so I'm assuming it applies to the whole building. Ian Nairn (in the Sussex volume of Pevsner's 'The Buildings of England') wasn't impressed: 'A seven-bay pilastered C18 front, stone and brick, with alterations in the rather slapdash taste of the 1830s: knobs on the skyline, strapwork and floral panels let into older surrounds in the attic'. I was much more impressed - for me, the building somehow conjures up Venice. Without looking all that closely, I took the 'floral panels' to be rather older. A pity, I think, that the old shop fronts haven't survived in more nearly original condition.
