The carved lintel from James Gavin's cottage showing the tailor's shears used to remove his ears as punishment for refusing to acknowledge Royal authority over the Kirk. The Royalist commander James Graham of Claverhouse, who became known in these parts as "Bluidy Clavers", is held personally to blame for Gavin's ordeal. Covenanter accounts of the action imply Clavers taking a direct "hands-on approach" rather than brutal minions acting under his orders. See the monument plaque text here Image
