Littledean Miners Dedication

The old coal truck is alongside Broad Street. The dedication is LITTLEDEAN In memory of the miners who walked this way to work. The British History website states that miners were recorded in Littledean from the mid 13th century. Eleven miners and a collier were listed in the parish in 1608. The number of coal miners probably increased in the 17th century, when squatters migrated to Littledean from elsewhere in the Forest of Dean. The mining community was centred on Callamore, where at least eight coal miners lived in 1728.
