Rackheath Airfield, home of the US 467th Bomb Group in WWII, lay to the west of the railway line with the main runway running parallel with it. A belt of woodland clearly seen on the Landranger map marks that runway's position. This map http://www.the467tharchive.org/frame.html on the 467th website makes it all clear. What is now the industrial estate at Rackheath, see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/18563, was the base's technical site and one of the hangars and the control tower are still standing.
