Benchmark on Stretton Tollhouse

This benchmark was established in 1856 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 318.0240 feet [96.9337 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Coventry to Lincoln levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 17. Mark on front of Stretton Toll-house, at junction of roads ; 1.46 ft. above surface." The 1887-1972 maps show a mark 318.8ft on the north face, north angle of building, south-east side of road. No doubt it was relevelled or replaced in the intervening period. The benchmark is easily found behind a fencepost at the corner of the building.
