Benchmark on East Lodge

This benchmark was established in 1856 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 357.7290 feet [109.0358 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Coventry to Lincoln levelling line. The height given on today's OS database is 108.869 metres (Newlyn datum). The surveyor's description was "Mark on North-west angle of High Wood Lodge ; 1.84 ft. above surface." All maps call this East Lodge. The 1887 map shows this mark on the south face, south-west corner of lodge, where it is easily found today behind a low hedge. The north-west angle would be on the far side of the house and inaccessible; doubtless an error on the Public Abstract, a common occurrence.
