From 1607 to 1844, the Queens Elizabeth's Grammar School (now the Royal Grammar School) occupied the old Hospital of St. Mary the Virgin in Westgate. It had to move in 1844 when the hospital was demolished to clear the site for the railway station. A single gate pier of the hospital's entrance was built into the corner of the building that subsequently occupied the site. This building was in turn demolished in 1971 to make way for Image Fortunately, the pier was again preserved, and stands at the northeast corner of the building.
