Originally the eastern part of Katherine Street, this road was renamed “Penny Meadow” in 1962. The land here was known as Penny Meadow before Katherine Street was built; it is believed that the name comes from the Reverend John Penny, parish priest of St Michael’s Parish Church in the 18th century (http://www.ashton-under-lyne.com/history/streetnames.htm Ashton-Under-Lyne.com).
