Thomas Telford (1757-1834) was renowned principally as the engineer responsible for many roads, harbours, bridges and canals. He was also responsible for a number of churches of which this is one, although little of his original design remains visible today. It is known as a "Parliamentary Church", one of 32 built across the Highlands and Islands between 1823 and 1835 as a result of an Act of Parliament. It stands on Main Street (A939) in Tomintoul.
