It is possible to look down between two bedstones to the great spur wheel and one stone nut. What I hadn't noticed on the day was that the arms of the great spur wheel carried a smaller internal gear that would have drive a horizontal shaft for auxiliary drives. This appears to be missing. The other set of wheels had the vertical shaft extended up into the stone floor with a crown wheel and space for three sets of auxiliary drive. The stones are French burr. The vertical rod that stops the gear from turning is to support the bedstone and is obviously a more recent addition for safety.
