Castanea sativa (aka Sweet chestnut). The NTS plaque beside the tree reads: Tradition claims that this Spanish chestnut was planted by Queen Ermangarde at the foundation of the Abbey in 1229. However the National Trust for Scotland has taken core borings which indicate that it is between 400 and 435 years old. [At September 1988] It could therefore now (May 2015) be in its 459th year of growth; with its planting date as early as 1556. The Abbey was not disestablished until 1603, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balmerino_Abbey
