At the time of the photograph Lucerne Road was a two-way street, but preparations were under way to make it one-way: cars parked on both sides made it hard for vehicles coming in opposite directions to pass and the section at the east end, where the road executed a little wiggle as it crossed the Norbury Brook, was particularly awkward.
