Hither Green Cemetery covers 65 acres. Almost in the centre is a memorial to all the people of Lewisham who died in the Second World War. In the foreground is a grave containing 31 children aged 5-15, and a teacher. The local Sandhurst Road School was bombed in 1943. 38 children and 6 adults died. Behind the trees in the background is the railway line into London. About 1/2 a mile from this spot lived E. Nesbit who wrote The Railway Children.
