The foundation stone of the Old Police Station and Prison was laid by the Mayor of Tiverton in 1844 and the building with its imposing front entrance was completed in 1846 designed by the local architect G .A. Boyce. Tiverton had its own police force until 1938 and the Chief Constable was also responsible for the town’s Fire Brigade and the Fire Station was sited next to the Police Station. At the time when the Devon Historic Buildings Trust was formed in 1973, the two adjacent buildings were threatened with demolition to make way for housing development but the financial climate of the time prevented this taking place. In 1977 the Trust’s representatives met District Council Officers to discuss ways of overcoming the financial difficulties so that these buildings could be saved. Subsequently the Trust commissioned a local architect to prepare a feasibility study for the whole site including the former Borough Jail. By the end of 1977 agreement had been reached with the District Council to convey the Old Police Station to the Trust which undertook to restore the buildings, employing Manpower Services Commission labour, and to convert it to two dwelling units. The adjoining Fire Station building was adapted to provide garages for the two units and the project included the demolition of the cell block at the rear and the levelling of the site in preparation for a future second phase of new housing. Following termination of the MSC agreement in September, 1978, the outstanding work was completed by contract and handed over in June, 1979.
