The population of this part of the Fens reached its peak in the late nineteenth century. Since then decline has been caused by the amalgamation of farms, smaller families, mechanisation of agriculture and a concentration of services in towns and the larger villages. Scenes such as this are not uncommon and many farms have disappeared almost without trace.
