Significant expansion and development work took place around Shrewsbury in the 1980s, including the construction of the M54 extension (which became the A5) and the eastern bypass works (now the A49) which cut a lot of through-traffic out of the medieval town centre. Telford Way was built to connect the two parts of the old A49, between Ditherington and Meole Brace.
