The modern school was built on the site of the old St Michael's school building that had stood here since Victorian times. It was this school that the former world light heavyweight boxing champion Freddie Mills (1919 - 1965) had attended as a boy. He was born in the town and was a tough, determined and aggressive fighter, honing his boxing skills in fairground booths and other venues on the south coast. His achievement was to become the world light heavyweight champion which he held from 1948 - 1950. He died in 1965 outside the London nightclub he owned of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Image
