Pub-explorer claims the pub dates from the 1690s. The 1881 Census lists Joseph Sims publican and farmer with wife and son. Directory listings include, 1829 and 1846 'Ann Bainbrigge, & maltster', 1855 'J.Bainbridge', 1874 'A Sick club held at the Black Horse contains about sixty members' and 'Bembridge Jno. brick mkr, maltster, & v', 1891 'Green William', 1895 'Mellor William', 1912 only the Nag's Head is listed. Brewery lists show it as a Sydney Evershed Ltd. pub that must be prior to 1905 and later Truswell’s Brewery Co. Ltd.
