Built c 1837, probably by John Wardle, for Richard Grainger. Grainger demolished a public house called The Lord Collingwood near the old Theatre Royal when Grey Street was built. He replaced it here, appropriately at the end of Nelson Street*. The building is Grade II listed http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1024908 . There is another Lord Collingwood pub in Jesmond Image with a three-dimensional sign Image * Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood (1748 – 1810) was an admiral of the Royal Navy, notable as a partner with Lord Nelson in several of the British victories of the Napoleonic Wars; he assumed command after Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar.
