Nantwich: half-timbered building commemorating the Great Fire

This building, one of many Tudor half-timbered structures in the town, commemorates the rebuilding of the town after the 1583 Great Fire, when Elizabeth I diverted revenues to finance reconstruction. The plaque above the bay window reads (in modernised spelling) "God grant our royal queen / in England long to reign / for she hath put her helping hand / to build this town again." At some stage in the following eighteen months the newsagents occupying the building changed its name and signwriting style: see Image
