Originally a large field to the north of Lucas's called Great meadow according to Cuckfield's 1843 tithe map it was acquired by the local council in 1971 for the development of a leisure centre and was eventually opened in 1976 having overcome residential objections and financial cutbacks from central government. The dolphin forms part of the coat of arms of the Sergison family who for many centuries were large landowners within the former parish of Cuckfield. The facility possesses a full length swimming pool, sports hall, gym and cafe.
