This is the dip slope of the North Downs. During the 2012 Olympics a major cycling event - the men's road-race - came this way. The ascent may not be as spectacularly steep as those on the scarp slope, but the riders must have faced a long uphill slog - steeper than the picture may suggest. The view from Staple Lane must be one of the widest (and furthest) in south-east England. The Hog's Back is visible to the west, and what looks like the whole of London to the north-east (impressive when the lights come on at dusk). In the present photo, high-rise buildings in Woking can be made out a little to the right of centre.
