This memorial was erected to remember the sixteen miners were killed, and the three others who died from injuries sustained, in the explosion at Hapton Valley Colliery, Friday 23rd March 1962 http://www.healeyhero.co.uk/rescue/pits/HaptonValley.htm . It is situated between the chapel and the Rossendale Road entrance to Burnley cemetery.
