Documents in the British Museum record King Edgar giving the village to Queen Aethelflaed in 962 and this is what is depicted on the village sign when it was called Ceorleswyrthe. On the post is the coat of arms which combines the Saint George’s cross of England, with a shield bearing the arms ascribed by mediaeval heralds to the Anglo Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia and the Wuffingas dynasty which ruled it, three golden crowns on a blue background. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4389951
