Chester Royal Infirmary was founded as a charitable institution in 1755 and housed in the upper part of the Bluecoat School. When the Bluecoat became too overcrowded this purpose-built hospital was constructed in 1761 to accommodate 100 patients. In the 1990's patients were transferred to the Countess of Chester Hospital and the old infirmary converted into apartments and re-named the 1761 Building.
