The bronze statue, “The Runner” by Colin Spofforth, stands outside the Manchester Regional Arena at Sportcity. It was commissioned to celebrate the Spirit of Friendship Festival as part of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The sculpture is 30 feet high and weighs seven tonnes making it the largest bronze sculpture dedicated to sport in the UK (http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/2002/news/072002/10/sculpture.shtml BBC). The statue, depicting an athlete on a globe, was unveiled outside the new national headquarters of the English Institute of Sport at Sportcity on 9th July 2002. A plaque nearby declares it to be “A celebration of the spirit of friendship and the XVII Commonwealth Games, Manchester”. The background is provided by the City of Manchester Stadium which was built for the 2002 games. It was renamed "Etihad Stadium" in 2010 as part of a sponsorship agreement.
