Whittlefield Bridge Aqueduct No 31a, Leeds and Liverpool Canal

This aqueduct was created when the M65 was constructed, in the late 1970s, and opened in 1980. Usually, a bridge or aqueduct would be built from the bottom up, but the canal had already been here for almost 200 years before the motorway came. The chosen solution was to build the aqueduct at surface level and then undercut the canal by removing the material below the new structure, creating the aqueduct.
