There was (and still is) no towpath through the Gannow Tunnel. Horses had to be taken over the tunnel using the specially constructed route (Boat Horse Lane). Small boys would often guide the horses as they climbed from the towpath to the lane, up and over the crest of the hill and down the other side. Nowadays, the footpath route between the two ends of the tunnel passes along Cog Lane and under a modern road development before descending back to the canal via Boat Horse lane.
