The Martyrs' Monument was erected in 1842-3 and commemorates the execution of four Protestant martyrs in St. Andrews during the turbulent 16th century: Patrick Hamilton (1527), Henry Forrest (1533), George Wishart (1546), and Walter Myln (1558).
